Webinar Recap: From Commitment to Practice – Integrating Human Rights Due Diligence Internally

On February 18th, we hosted our webinar “From Commitment to Practice: Integrating Human Rights Due Diligence Internally”, led by Sandra Atler and Femke Lotgerink.

The core message was clear: policy is easy – practice is hard

Many companies today have human rights policies in place. Expectations are clear, and legal requirements are tightening. Yet the real challenge lies elsewhere: how do you move from commitment on paper to consistent implementation across procurement, HR, risk management, internal audit, and legal functions?

Human rights due diligence (HRDD) cannot sit in a sustainability silo. It must become an integrated business process.

During the session, we explored what this means in practice:

  • Procurement & supply chain teams need to screen early, embed requirements in tendering, and move beyond “cut-and-run” contracts toward partnership and leverage
  • Human Resources plays a critical role in applying international labour standards consistently – including for contracted and vulnerable workers
  • Risk & Internal Audit must integrate human rights into enterprise risk management, treating impacts on people with the same seriousness as financial or safety risks
  • Legal & Compliance functions should go beyond domestic law where standards fall short and use contracts as tools to enable responsible conduct – not just to protect the company

There needs to be a shift from “risk to business” to also explicitly addressing risk to people – and ensuring internal controls reflect international human rights standards, not only company preference.
