Developing a sustainable supply chain

Business challenge
Our client is a specialist in consumer durables with production facilities all over the world. Most facilities in Europe are certified according to ISO14001. Monitoring production facilities and procurement in low cost countries, however, is a challenge. Purchasing is handled locally by each facility, of around 1000 suppliers.
In 2007, a draft Code of Conduct was developed in order to ensure a more aligned approach within the group. With no central purchasing, it was essential that the code was understood and fully implemented by each facility.

How we helped
Enact was assigned to help develop our client's management of CSR issues, with a focus on the supply chain. A step-by-step approach was taken when developing a methodology for monitoring facilities and suppliers. Tools for the implementation of the Code of Conduct and for review of facilities and support were introduced. Enact also identified areas for improvement and provided specific recommendations.

Results
A successful pilot has been run, testing tools and methodology. The project is ongoing and implementation continues. With this improved structure, our client is more easily able to identify, prioritise and manage key social and environmental issues based on core values and overall business objectives.
